Zhytomyr is considered to be one of the oldest cities in Ukraine. Since medieval times Zhytomyr was and still is the administrative center of the region, in 1918 the government of the Ukrainian People's Republic was working here.

Settlements and burial mounds of the Bronze Age and the Early Iron Age were discovered by archaeologists. Cemeteries of the VII century and the remains of the Old Russian settlement of the X - XIII centuries were also excavated within the city.

Zhytomyr region was a zone of heavy hostilities for 40 days. Dozens of residents of Zhytomyr and the region perished as a result of the Russian airstrikes. Houses, schools, kindergartens and hospitals were destroyed: Russians damaged almost three thousand buildings in Zhytomyr region with bombs and missiles
