The city is a compact planning structure, formed on the right bank of the Desna River.The special value of the urban environment is the presence of a significant number of historical and cultural monuments, unique architectural ensembles that are inextricably linked to the surrounding landscape, which gives the city its uniqueness and originality.
Pine and oak forests, hunting and fishing grounds, bischofite, oil and gas deposits, quartz sand, gravel, clay, kaolin and peat deposits.
Around 50% of the city's territory is covered by architectural monument protection zones approved by the Chernihiv Regional Executive Committee.
Water resources: Desna River, Stryzhen River, Bilous River, 6 lakes, 8 ponds, groundwater, artesian deep water of high quality.

The largest industrial output in the city is produced by the processing industry. The city has developed warehousing facilities that provide storage of products and services to the material production sectors:

With aim of maximum protection and popularization of cultural and architectural heritage of Chernihiv, it is necessary to have support of European Union, in particular UNESCO the World organization.
This is a certain guarantor of preservation, protection and control over the preservation of the cultural face of the city with the 1300-year history.
For today Chernihiv was presented in the preliminary list of the Worls Heritage of UNESCO.
YEARS HAVE PASSED SINCE THE FIRST WRITTEN MENTION
Over the centuries, the city was first the capital of the large Chernihiv princedom, then the centre of a voivodeship within the Polish-Lithuanian Commonwealth, a Cossack regiment of the Hetmanate, a province within the russian empire, and a regional centre since Ukraine's independence.
PRESERVED MONUMENTS OF THE PRE-MONGOL PERIOD
These include the Spasskyi Cathedral, the Borys and Hlib Cathedral, the Assumption Church, the Antonii Caves, and the Black Grave. In total, the city has 23 churches, as well as a number of monuments and memorials.
THE MOST POPULAR DIRECTIONS: the territory of Dytynets, Boldyny Hills and Chernihiv's Podil, Antonii Caves, and the M. Kotsiubynskyi Literary Museum. Certified guides provide sightseeing support in the city. The cultural heritage of Chernihiv is an integral part of the world's cultural heritage.
The list of cultural heritage sites includes 445 monuments:
● archaeological monuments – 272, among them 233 are of national significance
● historical monuments – 96, among them 3 are of national significance;
● architectural monuments - 67, among them 28 are of national importance;
● landmarks of monumental art – 9;
● landmarks of park art - 1
According to the conclusions of specialists of the Kyiv School of Economics, as of May 10, 2022, Chernihiv was one of the three cities after Mariupol and Kharkiv that suffered the greatest damage as a result of attacks by the Russian army. In general, in the city of Chernihiv, the estimated amount of losses due to the loss, destruction and damage of property is about 4.2 billion $
